Virtual Worlds Case Study:

MacArthur Launch

In October 2006, the MacArthur Foundation held a press conference in New York City to announce a $50 million program of investments to support programs in digital media. The Foundation worked with Text100 to plan and execute the live portion of the event in New York.

NMC Virtual Worlds was asked to stream the event into Second Life and to manage the virtual component of the launch. (See Building the Field of Digital Media and Learning and the press release for more background on the MacArthur program).

Live video from a panel discussion in New York was streamed into NMC Campus

Some 85 attendees within SL participated in the event, which was characterized at the time as “the best-run dual-world event to date.” Questions were channeled to New York form participants, and avatar close-ups were put on the screen in the live event as the questions were read.
