Thank you to all of those who have been making our weekly open house/ block parties successful. For those of you who have not yet attended, we will be meeting each week on a different NMC Community sim to connect and share information about what you are working on and how you are using Second Life with your Universities. Our next meeting will be at Teaching 6 on Wednesday, September 15th at 1:30pm PDT (check for local time) on the "Quad" at Teaching 6: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Teaching%206/128/128/24
We will meet on the "Quad" commons area of Teaching 6 for approximately an hour to casually connect and enjoy conversation.

"Your NMC Campus Story†highlights the many ways in which educators are using the NMC Campus in Second Life to spark innovation, learning, and creativity. This edition’s journey is brought to us by Douglas Story, an artist whose work has been featured on the NMC Campus numerous times as well as throughout Second Life.
I first became aware of NMC in early 2007 shortly after I attended an art show of sculpture by one Stella Costello. I was wearing an avatar that was in the shape of the solar system, and because of this unusual get-up I struck up a conversation with a woman who, as it turned out, was the administrator for Princeton University's presence in Second Life, which was (and I imagine still is) hosted on the NMC servers. Summer is in full swing and with the fall semester quickly approaching there is no time like the present to connect with your fellow NMC Community members. We are hosting an NMC Community block party and open house on Thursday, August 19th at 1:00 PM PST (check for local time) on the Teaching sim.

Any of you checking in with the OpenSim NMC Campus on OSgrid may have noticed it went away recently.
Fear not! I've been working away behind the scenes setting up, testing & developing for an NMC Grid on which we hope to offer rental islands and parcels as well as the opportunity to connect your own islands too. There will be more information about this to come of course.
If you're interested in some of the technical details: I'm running version 0.7-rc2. Although this isn't quite ready for prime time, it marks a large architectural change in the OpenSim servers & databases so for setting up a new grid it seemed to be the best starting point, ready for when it becomes the official release. On 6 – 8 September Innova Junior College, the Centre of Excellence for New Media, and the Media Development Authority will host the 2010 New Media in Education Fiesta (NMiEF). The fiesta includes the NMiEF 2010 Spotlight Conference, New Media in Education International Conference on Second Life and Innova Film Festival.
The event will be held in Second Life and invites educators to share perspectives and new media-related pedagogical practices in the
education context.

Welcome back to everyone who attended the NMC Summer Conference with us in Anaheim, it's been a busy couple of weeks since, catching up with work and adjusting to the time difference again; they say it's worse going West to East and I would have to concur!
It's been a busy time over at Linden Lab by all accounts too, with layoffs and then the retrurn of Philip Linden to the helm, but rest assured that while continuing to explore all the alternatives from Unity to VirtualLife, NMC Virtual Worlds is still absolutely committed to the Second Life platform!

Another how-to based on recent questions I've been asked, this time, how to show YouTube movies on a prim using shared media in Viewer 2 without showing the whole page.
First copy the url for the YouTube movie page you want to show from your browser, it'll look something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PMxDi6N9KU
This happens to be a music video from one of my favourite bands, the Octopus Project!
Next you'll want paste this into the shared media parameters in the texture tab for the face of your prim, but before closing the box, edit the url so it looks like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=4PMxDi6N9KU
In fact all you're doing is adding _popup after the word watch in the url so YouTube thinks it is playing the movie in a pop up browser window and therefore omits the rest of the page contents.
