OpenSim Update

published by Chris Holden Jul 21, 2010 02:23am
Any of you checking in with the OpenSim NMC Campus on OSgrid may have noticed it went away recently. Fear not! I've been working away behind the scenes setting up, testing & developing for an NMC Grid on which we hope to offer rental islands and parcels as well as the opportunity to connect your own islands too. There will be more information about this to come of course. If you're interested in some of the technical details: I'm running version 0.7-rc2. ... more...

Welcome Back

published by Chris Holden Jun 25, 2010 12:58am
Welcome back to everyone who attended the NMC Summer Conference with us in Anaheim, it's been a busy couple of weeks since, catching up with work and adjusting to the time difference again; they say it's worse going West to East and I would have to concur! It's been a busy time over at Linden Lab by all accounts too, with layoffs and then the retrurn of Philip Linden to the helm, but rest assured that while continuing to explore all ... more...

How-to: YouTube movies with shared media in Viewer 2

published by Chris Holden Jun 1, 2010 10:27am
Another how-to based on recent questions I've been asked, this time, how to show YouTube movies on a prim using shared media in Viewer 2 without showing the whole page. First copy the url for the YouTube movie page you want to show from your browser, it'll look something like this: This happens to be a music video from one of my favourite bands, the Octopus Project! Next you'll want paste this into the shared media parameters in the texture tab for the ... more...

NMC Orientation sneak peek

published by Chris Holden May 6, 2010 01:46am
If you've been reading Beth's design diary you'll already know we're working on a new orientation island for Viewer 2 over here on the NMC Campus so I thought I'd give you a sneak peek of our progress with the Disneyland Castle (in recognition of this year's Summer Conference venue) in the foreground and the Brussels Atomium in the background. We're very excited by the opportunity to try and create a magical, educational and informative experience for new users here. ... more...

Dynamic Shadows in Viewer 2

published by Chris Holden May 3, 2010 04:47am
As I was recently asked the question of how to enable dynamic shadows in Viewer 2, here it is for all to use. If you didn't even know SL had dynamic shadows, they've been around for at least a year now, but have remained an unsupported feature, tucked away behind a twisty path of submenu options, so use at your own risk! 1. Control-ALT-q to enable the 'Develop' menu 2. Develop -> Rendering -> enable 'Framebuffer Objects' 3. Develop -> Rendering -> enable ... more...

Interested in seeing Open Sim but don’t know where to start?

published by Chris Holden Apr 15, 2010 01:48am
If you didn't already know, Open Sim is the free, open source server software based on Second Life. It enables you to run your own sims (or have someone else run them for you) anywhere you want: on your desktop, behind your firewall, at a data centre even in the cloud! These sims can be stand-alone, connected to a grid (though not Second Life itself yet) or now Hypergrid enabled, which allows them to be both stand-alone yet reachable by ... more...

Viewer 2

published by Chris Holden Mar 23, 2010 07:33am
So... who's tried it? First made public during the SL Pro! conference, the new viewer's steadily gaining more publicity and I hope users. There are a whole slew of improvements to the interface designed to make it easier for new users but of most interest to us as developers is naturally the shared media. In a nutshell this is web media on a prim, interactive and independent of the old parcel streaming media properties so there are no longer any limitations ... more...

How did you do that?

published by Chris Holden Mar 16, 2010 03:37am
I had some queries about alpha windows during the conference as I used them for the Loyola build so here's an example that also demonstrates how to tackle an age old problem in Second Life - Gothic arches. Use this method when you have openings defined by an alpha channel in a larger area of texture to give them solidity in the reveals and mitigate some of the alpha ordering issues. It's pretty simple really; create a solid wall inside the ... more...

Loyola follow up

published by Chris Holden Mar 16, 2010 03:08am
As I used the build at Loyola to demonstrate various aspects of the development process at SLPro! I thought I'd follow up here with a picture of the completed development, including the Church on the left. more...
