[...] Some of you might remember that ESC worked with Larry Johnson and the New Media Consortium in spring of 2006 to create the first NMC Campus. We ended up shifting our priorities away from the educational market, although we gave Larry a parting gift of a multi-sim design for what would become the expansion of NMC into an increasing number of sims. NMC then worked with IVM (who also brought Dell and Infinite Mind to SL) to build out their expansion plans. Larry Johnson, who heads NMC, is smart, intense, and very, very serious about pushing the boundaries of how educational institutions can use virtual worlds like Second Life. He also has an incredible team working with him (hi Rachel and Alan) that I enjoyed working with. Last week, NMC announced that they were creating a services arm to help other educational institutions embrace virtual worlds like Second Life (although not exclusively Second Life). Personally, I think this is great, and a well-needed additional offering for an arguably underserved market segment. Larry has expanded his team with some wonderful SL builders and artists.
[...] Just announced today is the NMC Virtual Worlds initiative, what was once a single island grows into a larger NMC Campus, and that too will grow into something like an “Educational Archipelago” in Second Life: Today, the New Media Consortium announced the launch of NMC Virtual Worlds, a services unit under the NMC umbrella that will provide a full palette of support to educational institutions wishing to explore, build, or establish a presence in a range of virtual worlds. The program offers all of its services to educational institutions and museums on a simple cost-recovery basis, resulting in deeply discounted pricing for qualified institutions.more… [...]
